Newspapers 'alive and well' online?
Following some poor performances from British and US newspaper groups, it's interesting to see the UK's Newspaper Society (the trade body for the regional press) start championning the number of websites their members have. It's topped 1100 sites, which from 85 companies isn't a bad show, though not enough to offset the sector's steep decline in revenues (falling 5% from an estimated £4.09bn to £3.87bn according to the FT). Back in the mid-nineties i did a series of workshops to motivate the regional press to do more with online, and for the Newspaper Society itself to be more involved. Back then, the idea of a thousand sites would have seemed crazy, but it's a simple measure of the sector's swing to online.
