When Chinese authorities temporarily blocked Google.com last night, it felt like an unavoidable next step in the escalating unease between the world's largest country and the world's largest information service. The fact Google did not comply with requests for Google.cn to restrict access to overseas sites is no surprise, but what I'm struggling with is whether the same rules are being applied to Baidu and other national providers.
